It’s rare for a show’s Easter Egg to be an actual egg, let alone three of them.
However, that’s exactly what HBO’s House of the Dragon featured in the third episode of its second season, “The Burning Mill,” which aired on Sunday night.
In this episode, Rhaenyra Targaryen (played by Emma D’Arcy) sends Rhaena (played by Phoebe Campbell) to the Vale, and then she is supposed to travel across the Narrow Sea to Pentos. Rhaenyra also gives Rhaena four dragon eggs to take to Pentos for safekeeping. In the Game of Thrones pilot, Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) is presented with three petrified dragon eggs as a wedding gift in Pentos. Three of the eggs in the House of the Dragon scene are gold, green, and black, just like Dany’s.
Naturally, fans wondered: Are the three eggs that Rhaena is transporting the same ones given to Daenerys? The same eggs that hatched into dragons, which both aided Daenerys in conquering Westeros and ultimately contributed to her downfall?
It turns out, yes.
The episode’s director, Geeta Vasant Patel, confirmed to Mashable: “Those are Daenerys’ eggs. All of us who work on this show are big Game of Thrones fans, so it was very exciting to shoot that scene.”
With four eggs present, it might be assumed that one will eventually hatch into Rhaena’s dragon, but that remains speculation.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Patel also discussed the surprising scene where Rhaenyra sneaks back into King’s Landing for a secret meeting with Alicent Hightower (played by Olivia Cooke). She clarified that Rhaenyra wasn’t there to make a deal with Alicent.
“Rhaenyra was there to ask, ‘Did my father love me? Did he lie to me?’” Patel explained. “And that’s what that moment’s about… You realize that there is going to be a war because neither of them is willing to compromise. I think there’s something really profound happening with Rhaenyra, because she is someone who has compromised in the past. But in this moment, I believe — and this is me as a fan — there’s an ego rising in her.”
